Pick the range, not the maximum
A 0 to 3 bar gauge on an engine making 1 bar uses a third of the dial, so small differences are hard to read. Take the range closest to what your engine makes, with a sensible margin above.
Mechanical or digital
A mechanical one connects through a pressure hose straight to the manifold: simple, no electronics, but it brings a pressurised line into the cabin. A digital one uses a sensor and a wire, is more precise and allows alarms, but it depends on being wired correctly.
What you catch with it
When the peak figure starts dropping from one day to the next, you have a leak in the intake or a valve that no longer holds. It is the kind of thing that shows on the gauge long before you feel it at the wheel.
