The angle
The angle of the device, usually 20 or 30 degrees, has to match the lean of your seat back. In a saloon, with a nearly upright seat, you go for the small angle. The wrong angle lifts the device off the shoulders and it no longer works as it should.
Size and weight
The size is taken on shoulder width, not on height. The light models, at 640 or 675 grams, are felt far less over a long race than the 950 gram ones, and the difference shows in the price.
HANS or hybrid system
The classic device rests on the shoulders and is held by the shoulder straps. A hybrid system is worn like a vest and attaches directly to the harness, which helps in cars you get in and out of often or where the space above the shoulders is tight.
What else you need
You need posts fitted to the helmet, matched to the device, and shoulder straps of the correct width. The shoulder pads wear and can be replaced separately. Check the regulations for which standard is required in the series you run.
