What the numbers mean
The first number, the one with the W, shows how the oil flows cold, at startup. The second shows how thick it stays at working temperature. A 10W60 protects better when hot than a 5W30, but on an engine designed for thin oil it makes circulation harder and damages exactly what you meant to protect.
The specification beats the marketing
The engine manufacturer asks for a particular approval, written plainly on the container. That is the condition, not the word "racing" on the label. If the engine asks for a given norm, oil that does not carry it stays on the shelf, however good the name sounds.
On track
The sump temperature sits well above what you see in town and does not come down between laps. That is why track cars generally run an oil that stays thicker when hot and is changed by engine hours, not by kilometres.
How much to buy
Check in the manual how many litres go in with the filter, and take one litre over. The reason: in the first few thousand kilometres after a change, most tuned engines use a little. And topping up with a different oil undoes half the reason you chose it.
