In tank or in line
An in tank pump is cooled and quietened by the fuel around it and is the clean option on a road car. An external one mounts in the line, under the car, and is easier to change, but it makes noise and has to sit below the level of the tank, otherwise it draws air and loses prime.
How much flow you need
Flow is chosen on power and on fuel, and it is read at the real pressure in the system, not at zero. On E85 the engine burns roughly 30% more fuel for the same power, so it asks for a bigger pump. The exact figure comes from whoever maps it, not from a general table.
What gets changed with the pump
The fuel filter and the pickup strainer always go with the pump. They are cheap and they are exactly why the next pump dies. Check the wiring gauge too: a high flow pump draws more current, and on the original loom the voltage drops and the pump no longer gives the flow on its data sheet.
Ethanol
Not every pump takes E85. Compatibility is on each product page, and the wrong pump seizes within a few thousand kilometres. If ethanol is in your plans, buy the compatible pump from the start.
