From AN6 to AN12
The AN number gives the inside diameter, in sixteenths of an inch: AN6 is the one most used for fuel, AN8 and AN10 for return and for oil, AN12 for pump suction or for cooling. The size is chosen for the flow required, not for what fits on the fitting.
Rubber hose or PTFE
Ordinary hose is cheaper and easier to assemble. The PTFE lined one stands up to aggressive fuels, to E85 and to higher temperatures, and it does not let the smell through the wall. The fittings differ between the two types and do not mix.
What else goes into a line
Beyond hose and fittings you need clamps or crimped ends, separators where two lines run parallel and, on fuel, quick releases with shut off, so you can disconnect without emptying the system.
On assembly
AN fittings are tightened with proper spanners, with wide jaws, so you do not deform the aluminium hex. After assembly, the line is checked under pressure before the first start.
