The sole
On a race boot, the sole is a few millimetres thick and made not to insulate. You feel where the brake starts to give and how hard you are pressing, which is lost completely in ordinary trainers. The price is that gravel and cold concrete come straight through.
The narrow heel
The back is narrower and more rounded so you can pivot the foot on the brake and touch the throttle with the edge of the sole. Without that, heel and toe becomes a lottery.
The size
The sizes are Italian and usually run smaller than European ones. The boot has to sit tight, but without crushing the toes: it gives a little with wear. Try them with a fireproof sock on, not an ordinary one.
Karting, trackday or competition
Karting boots have a thicker sole and extra heel protection, because you sit differently in the chassis. Trackday ones need no homologation. If you compete, check the regulations for the standard required and buy from the homologated ones.
How to keep them
Do not leave them in the sun in a boot and keep them away from fuel and solvents: the fireproof material degrades and the sole comes unstuck. After a wet weekend, dry them in the shade, not on a radiator.
