Digital or analogue
Digital reads in hundredths and is easier to read with gloves on and in poor light. Analogue, with a large dial, has no batteries to change and does not break if you drop it. Both work, as long as you always use the same one: two different gauges give you two truths.
The bleed valve
A gauge with a bleed valve lets you come down to exactly the figure you want once the tyre has warmed up, without pulling the hose on and off ten times. It is the function that matters most between runs.
When you measure
Pressure is taken both cold, before you go out, and hot, as soon as you come into the paddock. The difference between the two says more than either figure on its own.
