What gets checked at scrutineering
The label sewn inside carries the standard and the homologation number. The official looks at that, not at the brand and not at what it cost. Check in the regulations of your competition which standard is required, because not every series asks for the same thing.
Two or three layers
More layers means more protection time, but also more heat and less freedom of movement. A light, well ventilated suit keeps you fresher towards the end of a race, and that shows in the times. Choose by how long your stints are.
What goes underneath
The suit alone is not the whole system: underwear, balaclava and fireproof socks are part of the protection and are required separately by the regulations. See the FIA underwear.
The size
It is taken over fireproof underwear, not over a t-shirt. A suit that is too tight locks you into the seat and tires you; one that is too loose gathers under the harness. Size charts differ from brand to brand, so do not assume a size from one manufacturer holds at another.
Care
Wash rarely, cold, with no softener and no bleach: those leave deposits that change how the material behaves in fire. Dry in the shade, never on a radiator.
