Complete kit or part by part
Some are complete kits, and the rest are bought separately: friction discs, pressure plates and release bearings. The practical rule is not to put a new disc against a worn cover, and to change the bearing at the same time, because the labour is the same.
Organic, sintered, pucked
An organic disc is the kindest to the flywheel and to your left leg, but it is the first to give up under high torque. A cerametallic or sintered one holds far more, but it bites suddenly and is hard to pull away smoothly on. The 4 and 6 puck versions are competition parts: they engage almost like a switch and wear the flywheel if you slip them.
What to check first
The diameter and the number of splines have to match the gearbox, and some kits ask for a dedicated flywheel as well. After fitting, competition discs do not need a long bedding in, but organic ones need a few hundred gentle kilometres to settle.
