Full face or open face
A closed helmet protects the face as well and is mandatory in most competitions. An open one is cooler and more comfortable in traffic and at club karting, but it leaves the face exposed. With an open helmet you use ear defenders with a boom microphone, with a closed one in-ear headsets.
The size
It is taken with a tape measure, around the head, above the eyebrows. The helmet has to sit tight: if it moves when you shake your head, it is too big. The lining gives a little after the first few hours of wear, so do not choose on how comfortable it feels in the first second.
Homologation
Every organiser says which standard they accept. A good trackday helmet may not be accepted at a licensed race. Check beforehand, because there is no negotiating on the day.
