Where the power is made and where the sound is made
Power comes from the first part of the system, the end nearest the engine: manifold, downpipe and pipe diameter. Sound comes from the second part: centre box and rear box. If you only want a different tone, you do not need a full system. If you want power on a turbo engine, you start at the downpipe, not at the box.
The centre box
It is the part that cuts the low resonance that comes into the cabin when you hold a steady speed on a long stretch. It fits on 63 or on 76 mm and is the cheapest correction when a sport system has come out too loud.
Gas accelerators and resonators
A few of these are gas accelerators and resonators, short sections welded into the system to change how the gases settle. They are used when you want to correct a particular tone, not to gain horsepower.
Heat insulation
Wrap and sleeving keep the heat in the pipe. The engine breathes out more easily and the temperature under the bonnet drops. In exchange, wrap holds moisture and speeds up rusting of the pipe underneath, so on a car driven through a salted winter it is worth thinking about twice.
Inspection and public roads
On public roads the exhaust has to stay within the noise limit and keep the catalyst if the car came with one from the factory. A removable silencer is the simplest answer if you want both track use and a car that passes the test.
