Single or double opening
A balaclava with a single opening goes with a closed, full face helmet. The double opening one, around the eyes and the mouth, is made for an open face helmet, where you need air and room for a microphone.
Homologated or not
For trackday and karting, a fireproof balaclava without homologation is enough in most cases. In licensed competition, the homologated one is required, with the sewn in label. Check the regulations of your series.
Washing
Cold, with no softener. Softener leaves a film on the fibre and changes how it behaves at high temperature, which is exactly what you do not want from a fireproof piece.
