The pieces of the set
The top and the bottoms are the base pieces. To those are added socks and a balaclava, also fireproof, which get checked just as carefully at scrutineering. Shorty versions exist for short races and for high heat.
Why it has to be tight
Underwear has to sit against the skin, with no air between it and the body. A layer of trapped air conducts heat faster than you would think. That is why it is bought to size, not one up for comfort.
Cotton underneath undoes it all
Nothing cotton or in ordinary synthetics is worn under fireproof underwear. They melt onto the skin and turn the protection into an extra problem.
Washing
Cold, with no softener and no bleach. Softener leaves a film that changes how the fibre behaves at high temperature. Dry in the shade, never on a radiator and never in a tumble dryer.
