Diameter and airflow
The diameter has to fit the space available, and the airflow has to cover the area of the radiator. Both are written into the name of each product. A large fan that does not fit helps nothing, and two small ones placed well often beat one large one.
Pusher or puller
A pusher mounts in front of the radiator and pushes air through it. A puller sits behind and draws it. A puller is generally more efficient, but it needs space between the radiator and the engine. The direction is specified for each product and cannot be reversed just by swapping the wires.
Power supply
A competition fan draws serious current and does not go straight onto the standard loom. It needs a relay, its own fuse and cable of the right gauge. A thermostat or an ECU output switches it on at the temperature you choose.
The mounting frame
The fan mounts on a frame, not directly on the radiator fins, which bend and lose surface. A well made frame also closes off the edges, so the air is forced through the core.
