The thermocouple
A type K thermocouple is used, screwed into the manifold, as close to the head as possible. The further away it is, the lower and slower the reading, and so the less useful.
Fitting
It needs drilling and tapping in the manifold, or a welded boss. It is done before the manifold goes on the car, so no swarf is left inside.
