Torsen, meaning no plates
The helical mechanism locks through the friction of the gears, not through clutch plates. The practical consequence: it has no consumables to change and needs no oil with a special plate additive. It works progressively and does not snatch.
Chosen on the gearbox
The names contain the gearbox code, of the MA, TL4 or 02Q kind, because the same car was given different gearboxes in different years and engines. The code is read off the gearbox or from the registration document, not deduced from the model.
What changes in the driving
On corner exit under power, the car pulls straighter and spins the inside wheel less. In exchange, on a front wheel drive car you feel more of it through the wheel when you accelerate out of a corner, and that takes getting used to.
What gets changed with it
With the gearbox open anyway, it is worth changing the bearings and the driveshaft seals, and putting in fresh oil of the required grade. The labour of going in a second time costs more than the parts themselves.
