Standalone ECU, plugin or piggyback
EMU Black and EMU Classic replace the standard ECU, and EMU PRO 8 and PRO 16 take the same idea further, for engines with many inputs and outputs. On the cars they cover there is a plugin version, which goes straight into the original connector. The Digital ECU Tuner 3 is a different approach: it sits between the sensors and the factory ECU and modifies their signals, without removing it.
What runs on CAN
The PMU module takes the fuse and relay box out of the car and replaces it with programmable outputs. The ADU displays show and log everything travelling on the bus. On top of those go lambda modules, EGT, GPS, tyre temperature cameras, keypads and wheel panels. They all talk on the same two wires, so the loom drops in weight and in number of connections.
What else you need besides the standalone ECU
Universal or labelled looms, connectors with pins for each device, SuperSeal connectors, pressure and temperature sensors. A standalone ECU without the right sensors cannot see what is happening in the engine, so it has nothing to correct.
What the product does not give you
The standalone ECU comes without a map for your engine. The map is made on a dyno or on the road, by someone who knows the system, and it is a cost separate from the part. Without it, a standalone will start the engine, but it will not give it anything extra.
