Independent arms at the rear
For a small front wheel drive car, the Mini has independent arms at the rear, not a torsion beam. That means you have camber and toe to set on the rear axle, and more bush positions to work on. It is also why it behaves the way it does on track.
R53 and F56, two different cars
The R50, R52 and R53 run from 2001 to 2006. The post 2014 cars are on the UKL platform, the same family as the F48 generation BMW X1. Nothing in the suspension moves between them, however similar the car looks.
What gets done first
The front arm bushes. The standard rubber softens and the steering goes vague around the straight ahead. It is easily mistaken for a tired rack, but most of the time it is the bush.
