The rate
The rate says how stiff the spring is: 8 kg/mm needs 8 kilograms to compress it one millimetre. It goes up when the car has picked up weight on the axle, when you have aero pushing down, or when you want less roll on turn in. It goes down when the surface is broken and the wheel has to be left to work. The range runs from 2 to 24 kg/mm.
The diameter is not a choice
The spring has to seat on the perch of the coilover, so the inside diameter is set by the kit, not by preference. On BC Racing the standard perch is 62 mm on most applications. Tapered springs have two diameters, one at each end.
The length
A spring that is too short unloads at full extension and the wheel is left without load over bumps. One that is too long eats the ride height adjustment and you can no longer drop the car. The lengths run from 100 to 300 mm.
After fitting
Ride height and alignment are redone. If you have scales, corner weighting too: changing the rate moves load between the wheels.
