The thread

M12x1.25, M12x1.5, M14x1.5 and so on: the first number is the diameter, the second the pitch. An M12x1.25 nut screws a few turns onto an M12x1.5 stud and seems to go on, then strips the thread on the move. The thread is taken from the car's data or from the nut you took off, not from a guess.

The seat shape

A 60 degree taper is the most common, but there is also a ball seat and a flat seat with a washer, depending on the wheel. Aftermarket wheels often need a different type from the original ones. A nut with the wrong seat rests on too small an area and works loose on the move, even if it was torqued correctly.

The length, above all with spacers

When you fit spacers, the original stud ends up too short and not enough thread goes into the hub. The long studs in this collection, from 68 to 90 mm, exist for exactly that. The safety rule: at least as much thread engaged as the diameter of the bolt.

Locking nuts

A locking set replaces one nut on each wheel and comes with a special key. Keep the key in the car, not in the garage, and photograph the code on it: without the key you cannot get a wheel off, even at a garage.
