Four, five or six points
A six point harness has two straps between the legs and holds the pelvis in place, which stops you sliding under the lap belt in a violent stop. A five point has a single central strap. Four points are used at trackdays, but are not accepted in most licensed competition.
The angle of the shoulder straps
This is where fitting goes wrong most often. The shoulder straps have to leave the back of the seat almost horizontally, angled slightly down, and must not rise towards the mounting point. A strap that rises too much pushes the spine down in an impact, instead of holding the shoulders.
Where they mount
The anchorage points go into the body structure or into the roll cage, with spreader plates where the metal is thin. A mounting in unsupported floor tears out, and at scrutineering that is exactly where they look.
What goes with them
A harness works as a set with the seat and the head restraint device. On a seat with wings, the shoulder straps pass through its cutouts, and the strap width has to match what the device asks for. Check in the regulations of your competition which standard is required, because the series differ.
