The gauge and the sender have to match
Every gauge expects a particular resistance range from the sender. The wrong sender shows plausible and wrong figures, which is worse than an empty dash.
Calibration
It is done by emptying the cell and adding measured quantities, noting the reading at each step. In an irregularly shaped cell, the relationship between litres and level is not linear.
