Tachometers

A competition rev counter is larger and is positioned so the area where you change falls in your line of sight. Some can be rotated, so you bring the shift zone to the top. A shift light is read far faster than a needle, and that means shifts at the same point lap after lap.

The range

Pick the range close to the maximum revs of your engine. On a 10,500 rpm counter fitted to an engine that cuts at 6,500, you use two thirds of the dial and read it worst exactly where it matters.

Size and position

80, 100 or 115 mm. The large one is read out of the corner of your eye, without taking your eyes off the track, and that is why it is often mounted on the column rather than in the dash. Some can be rotated, so you bring the shift zone to the top.

Shift light

The shift light is set to the engine speed you want and is far quicker to read than a needle. On track, that means consistent shifts lap after lap, not just while you are fresh.
