Two ways of measuring speed in a car whose dash you have taken out. The mechanical one connects by cable to the gearbox and depends on nothing else, but it needs recalibrating when you change wheel diameter or final drive ratio. The GPS one shows speed over the ground, whatever wheels you run.

Mechanical

The mechanical one connects by cable to the gearbox and depends on nothing else. In exchange, the reading changes if you change wheel diameter or final drive ratio, and it has to be recalibrated.

GPS

The GPS one shows real speed over the ground, whatever wheels and tyres you run. It needs no cable to the gearbox, only power and a view of the sky for the antenna.
