The figures
With the engine running, the voltage should sit in the range the car manufacturer gives and should not swing. If it drops below it with revs, the alternator or the regulator are on their way out. If it goes above, the regulator is overcharging and boiling the battery.
Where it wires in
To a switched live, not straight to the battery, so it does not stay lit when the car is parked. The lighting wire goes to the sidelights.
