Organic or cerametallic
Organic material takes up progressively and is kind to the flywheel, but it gives up as it heats and as torque rises. Cerametallic, with pucks, holds far more torque and is harder to slip, but it bites as you pull away: in town it feels like a clutch that grabs suddenly. The number of pucks, 4, 5 or 6, is in the name.
Sprung hub or solid
A sprung hub disc damps the shock of every engagement and protects the gearbox. A solid one passes everything through, directly, and is built for racing, where response matters more than the life of the gearbox. On the road, a solid disc brings gearbox rattle at idle. It is not a fault, that is how it works.
The three figures that decide
The outer diameter, the number of splines and the hub diameter all three have to match. They are written into the name of each reference, in the form 184MM 1.00X23 or similar. Check them on the disc you took out, not on the model of car: the same car was given different clutches in different years.
What gets changed with it
The pressure plate and the release bearing go with a new disc, because they wore together. The flywheel is checked and skimmed, or replaced if it has heat cracks. The gearbox comes out anyway, so a second job six months later means paying the labour twice.
