The position matters
There are references for the front axle and for the rear, split between left and right. Calipers are not interchangeable between sides: the bleed nipple has to stay at the highest point, otherwise the air does not come out when you bleed.
What gets changed at the same time
New pads go on with a new caliper, because the old ones took their shape from the previous disc and piston. Check the brake hose too: if it is over ten years old, change it now, while the system is open anyway.
After fitting
The system has to be bled, starting with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder. The first stops are made gently, so the pads lay their contact layer down on the disc.
