Made per engine
Dedicated kits bolt into the factory points and come with the pipework and brackets already made. Fitting takes hours, not days, and you are not left with a pipe that will not fit. The engine is written into the name of each kit.
Universal
A universal core is cheaper and gives you freedom in placing it, but it needs pipework made on the spot, welded brackets and a bit of thought about the path of the air. It makes sense on a car where you are building the front end to order anyway.
Thicker is not automatically better
A very thick core cools more, but it also resists more: you lose pressure between the turbo and the engine and pick up more slowly. A thinner core that is wider and well fed with air often works better in reality.
The air has to have somewhere to go
A large intercooler behind a closed bumper has nothing to cool. Check what is in front of it and what is behind it: the water radiator gets the air already warmed by the intercooler, and that shows in the engine temperature.
