Wrap
It goes straight onto the pipe, overlapping by about a third of its width, held with stainless ties. It keeps the heat inside, which helps the gases leave faster, and drops the temperature in the engine bay. The width and length are written into the name.
Foil and adhesive sheet
Reflective faced foils stick to the surface that needs protecting, not to the heat source: the floor, the tunnel, the back of the bumper, a tank cover. They are the right answer when you cannot or do not want to wrap the pipe.
Sleeving for hose and cable
Sleeves pull over a fuel hose, over a loom running close to the exhaust or over a brake hose. They cost little and take exactly the parts that fail badly out of the equation.
What to know first
Wrap also holds moisture, and the pipe underneath it rusts faster on a car driven through a salted winter. On stainless it matters less, on ordinary steel it matters a lot. On the first heat cycle the wrap smokes and smells for a few minutes: that is normal, it is the binder burning off.
