The intercooler
It cools the compressed air before it goes into the engine. Cooler air means more oxygen in the same volume and less risk of detonation. Dedicated kits bolt into the factory points and come with the pipework made; universal ones need adapting and brackets made on the spot.
Thicker does not automatically mean better
A very thick core cools more, but it also resists the air passing through it, so you lose pressure between the turbo and the engine and gain lag on pick up. A thinner core that is wider and well fed with air often works better in real conditions.
Electric fans
Most of them are SPAL. They are chosen on diameter, on airflow and on direction: pusher, mounted in front of the radiator, or puller, mounted behind. Check the current draw as well and fit a relay and a separate fuse; they do not go straight onto the standard loom.
Radiator, hoses and thermostat
A radiator with a larger core makes sense once you have sorted the airflow through the front of the car. Silicone hoses take the hot and cold cycles better than tired rubber. A thermostat that opens earlier helps on track, but it makes the engine slower to reach temperature in winter.
