Adjustable or fixed
An adjustable regulator lets you choose the pressure, usually between 1 and 5 bar, which is necessary when you change the injectors or the pump. A fixed one is simple and safe, but it does not help you if the system has changed underneath it.
With return
A return system sends the surplus back to the tank and holds pressure far more steadily. On cars without a return from the factory, moving to a return line means an extra run of pipe, but it settles the pressure fluctuations at high load for good.
The vacuum reference
Most regulators have a vacuum connection from the manifold. Its job is to keep the pressure difference across the injector constant, so the quantity injected does not change with load. If the connection is forgotten or blocked, the map has nothing to lean on.
What goes on with it
A gauge on the rail, so you can see what you are doing while you adjust, and a pre filter before the pump. Rebuild kits exist for regulators that have done some miles and started to leak past the diaphragm.
