The three materials
8740 is the base steel, enough for most moderately tuned road engines. L19 and Custom Age 625 are stronger alloys, for high revs and loads 8740 no longer takes. The material is on each kit's page; the price follows the same order.
Tightened on stretch, not on torque
The torque on a wrench measures friction, not the tension in the bolt. On ARP bolts, the correct method is measuring the stretch with a dial gauge and tightening to the figure the manufacturer gives. It is the difference between a correct assembly and one that loosens on the third track outing.
The lubricant matters
The ARP torque figures are given with their own assembly lubricant. With ordinary engine oil the friction differs and the same wrench gives a different tension in the bolt. Do not improvise here.
Replaced every time they come apart
A rod bolt that has been torqued once has used up part of its elasticity. If you take the rods apart, you fit new bolts, however good the old ones look and however many kilometres they have done.
