On track and on the road
On a circuit, you gain margin. In winter, on the road, the engine takes longer to reach working temperature, the cabin warms more slowly and fuel use rises a little over the first kilometres. It is a conscious trade, not an improvement on every front.
On fitting
The gasket is changed with it and the system is bled completely. Air left in the circuit gives you exactly the symptom you were trying to fix.
