Round or oval
An oval silencer is flatter and fits where you have no clearance, under the floor or beside the axle. A round one has better internal volume for the same section and holds the noise down better. The choice is made on the space available, measured on the car, not on how it looks.
Centre or offset inlet
The names say where the pipe goes in and where it comes out: centre to centre, centre to offset and so on. The wrong choice forces two extra bends on you, which means labour and a loss you did not want.
The diameter
The inlet diameter, in millimetres, is written into the name. It is measured on the cut pipe, with a caliper. 50 mm, 63.5 mm and 76 mm are the most used, and 63.5 mm means 2.5 inches.
Stainless
Every silencer in this collection is stainless, so the body does not rust and does not stain around the weld. When welding, ask for the right wire for stainless; a weld made with ordinary filler rusts exactly where you cannot see it.
