How to choose FIA gloves
Gloves are an essential part of a driver's safety equipment. They have to be safe, light, hard wearing and supple at the same time, so that driving stays comfortable.
The palm must not touch natural leather directly: leather inserts are only allowed applied over Nomex fabric. When you try them on, nothing should pinch the palm, because that would spoil your grip on the wheel.
Homologation and safety
Wearing fireproof gloves homologated to FIA 8856-2000 (or the newer standard FIA 8856-2018) is compulsory for drivers and optional for co-drivers, on pain of exclusion from the race. The homologation labels have to be sewn or printed on the outside of the glove, at the wrist.
What the features mean
Beyond having to be fireproof, some gloves have reinforcements or padding at the fingers and in the palm, to damp vibration and add protection.
Leather or silicone inserts give better grip on the wheel; mesh inserts let the hand breathe. External seams are kinder to the palm, internal ones look cleaner. Single layer gloves cut weight.
The wrist closure matters: velcro for a firm fit, or elastic for simplicity. Pre-curved gloves reduce hand fatigue over a race.
How to measure
Measure the circumference of your palm with a tape measure, at the base of the thumb, without including the thumb. Compare the figure with the chart below. The glove has to be tight enough that nothing rubs while you drive.
