What 10W-60 means
10W is the cold grade, set by the cranking viscosity. Castrol measures 4879 mPa.s at -25 °C, below the 7000 limit of the 10W grade. 60 is the hot grade: at 100 °C the oil runs 22.7 mm2/s, inside the SAE 60 band, which starts at 21.9.
Which engines it is for
- BMW M models, for which the oil holds the BMW approval
- Engines where the maker requires VW 501 01/505 00. Castrol lists the Audi R8 V10 GT, Bugatti Veyron and Bugatti Chiron as examples
- Engines where the handbook asks for a 10W-60 ACEA A3/B4. Castrol lists the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S, Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and Ferrari FF as examples
- The specification in your handbook decides. If it appears in the table above, the oil is a match
Before the oil change
- The data sheet lists no ACEA C specification. Engines with a particulate filter that require a C specification need a different oil
- The values in the table are typical production figures as published by Castrol, not specification limits
- Castrol asks for the can to be stored under cover, below 60 °C and away from frost
