1/4 NPT Plug with Hex Head, Let's Race Aluminium
Tapered NPT plug for closing an unused port. The external hex head takes an open-ended spanner. The 1/4 NPT thread measures 13.6 mm across the outside, with 18 threads per inch, and seals on the taper with tape or paste.
Specifications
| Thread | 1/4 NPT |
| Thread outside diameter | 13.6 mm |
| Threads per inch | 18 |
| Head | external hex |
| Sealing | tapered thread, with tape or paste |
| Material | anodised aluminium |
Application
- Closes an unused NPT port on a pump, fuel rail, distribution block or filter housing.
- Measure the thread before ordering: with NPT the number is not the diameter, see the table below.
What the NPT size means
The number in front of NPT is not a diameter. It is a nominal pipe size, inherited from plumbing, and the thread measured with a caliper always comes out larger. What you find on the part:
| Size | Thread outside diameter | Threads per inch |
| 1/8 NPT | 10.2 mm | 27 |
| 1/4 NPT | 13.6 mm | 18 |
| 3/8 NPT | 17.1 mm | 18 |
| 1/2 NPT | 21.2 mm | 14 |
| 3/4 NPT | 26.6 mm | 14 |
So a 1/8 NPT measures over 10 mm, not 3 mm. The thread has a 1:16 taper, it narrows as it goes in, and that is why it seals by itself: fit it with tape or sealing paste and tighten until you feel it, not to the stop. Dimensions are from ANSI/ASME B1.20.1.
