- Edge-to-edge bonding keeps the boot narrow, so it does not catch on the pedals
- Boots are one part of the kit: suit, underwear, balaclava, socks and gloves must also be FIA approved (8856-2018, or 8856-2000 where the rules still accept it)

Label and validity
- The FIA label shows the standard, the manufacturer, the homologation number and the last year of validity
- FIA 8856-2018 equipment is valid for 10 years after the year of manufacture. Check the year on the label before every season
- Appendix L of the International Sporting Code requires FIA 8856-2018 approval for the suit, gloves, long underwear, balaclava, socks and boots in the FIA championships it lists (F1, WEC, WRC, World Rallycross, international GT3 series); elsewhere 8856-2000 is still accepted until 31.12.2028
