Buying guide and details
The cover presses the disc onto the flywheel, and when torque rises it is the first thing to give up: the disc slips high in the revs in the long gears, even with new friction material. An uprated one holds the extra torque. Bratex, AP Racing, Sachs and Helix.
Clamp load
An uprated cover clamps harder, so it holds more torque without slipping. You pay for it at the pedal: the clutch becomes heavier, and in heavy traffic you feel it. Do not take more clamp load than the engine asks for.
The diameter has to match the disc
The cover and the disc work as a pair, on the same diameter. The diameter is in the name of each reference, in millimetres. Check it on the part you took off, because the same car was given clutches of different diameters in different years.
The flywheel
The flywheel face is skimmed, or the flywheel is replaced, when it has heat cracks, blue patches or steps worn into it. A new cover on a tired flywheel judders from the first pull away, and you dropped the gearbox for nothing.
The complete set
Cover, disc and release bearing are changed together. They wore together and the real cost of the job is the labour of dropping the gearbox, not the parts. A second job six months later costs you the labour twice.
