The MFactory metal plate LSD locks the driven wheels through packs of friction plates, pressed by ramps and preload springs. Unlike a helical unit, it keeps locking when one wheel loses grip, which is why it is made for dedicated circuit, rally and drift cars.

What to check

  • The v2 version uses Active Friction Type-SS plates: noise and vibration in slow turns drop by up to 50%.
  • 1.0 way locks on acceleration only. 1.5 way locks on acceleration and partly under engine braking. 2.0 way locks equally on and off throttle.
  • The 1.0/1.5 version ships set to 1.5 way and the 1.5/2.0 version ships set to 2.0 way, both with plates stacked for 100% lock. Switching ramps requires opening the differential.
  • Preload, ramp angle and lock percentage are adjustable without special tools, with the gearbox removed.
  • The plates wear: MFactory asks for their thickness to be checked at every service, minimum 1.58 mm. Replacement plates and preload springs are sold separately.
  • MFactory recommends: on rear-wheel drive, 1.0 or 1.5 way for road and circuit, 2.0 way for drifting.
  • On the manual 135i and on the 2007-on 335i with manual or DCT gearbox, the factory ring gear is welded to the differential: it has to be machined to accept the LSD, or a new bolted ring and pinion fitted.
