Handheld or automatic
A handheld extinguisher is a bottle mounted within reach, which you discharge yourself. It is cheap, fits quickly and covers the requirement at most amateur events. An automatic system has the bottle mounted somewhere protected and fires through nozzles into two areas at once, engine and cabin, whether you are conscious or not. At events run to FIA regulations, the automatic system is usually mandatory.
Mechanical or electric activation
The mechanical one works through pull cables and has nothing electrical to fail in an impact. The electric one fires from a button or a sensor and allows dual controls, from the cabin and from outside. Both versions are in the range.
The extinguishing agent
ABC powder is the cheapest and puts a fire out reliably, but it coats the whole engine bay and cleaning up afterwards is a story in itself. AFFF foam cools the parts and stops liquids reigniting. Novec leaves no residue, so it is the choice when there is expensive electronics behind it.
What is in this collection
Sparco, RRS, CNC71 and Lifeline. Extinguishers from 2 kg powder through to 4.25 litre systems. Plus external activation units, firing buttons, unions and distribution pipe. The brackets are made per car: BMW E36, E46, modern 1 Series and 3 Series, and the Toyota GT86 with the Subaru BRZ.
Before you order
Check the regulations of the event you are going to: they ask for a particular homologation (FIA 8865-2015 and others), a minimum capacity and sometimes a validity date. The homologation has a term and the bottles are recharged periodically, so an extinguisher bought now does not stay compliant forever. The mounting bracket and the unions do not come with the bottle unless the product description says so explicitly.
