Why the wet boiling point matters
Brake fluid absorbs water from the air, and water lowers its boiling point. The wet value is measured to SAE J1703, on fluid humidified in the lab. When the fluid boils in the caliper, vapour bubbles form and the pedal goes soft. Castrol states that SRF keeps its high threshold throughout its service life.
Before you fill
- It mixes with conventional DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids, but mixing lowers its performance. Castrol advises draining the old fluid and flushing the system before filling
- Changing it within 18 months keeps the boiling threshold where the data sheet puts it
- Not for brake systems that require mineral oil
- Castrol asks for the bottle to be stored under cover, below 60 °C and away from frost
