Good to know
- The new shape keeps the shoulder belts on the device better (HANS)
- Replacement HANS IV pads: HANS IV padding kit, part number YF0035
- For the more reclined position in single seaters and prototypes: HANS III 30 degree, part number AF0103
- In FIA events the anchors must be FIA approved: post anchor or M61; Quick Click is SFI only (HANS)
- The helmet must be FIA 8859 or 8860; see the FIA car racing helmets collection
Choosing the size
- Measure neck circumference above the shirt collar with a soft tape, or neck width with a ruler at the same height
- Stilo chart: S: neck 11.5-12.8 cm, collar 36.1-40.2 cm; M: neck 12.5-14.8 cm, collar 39.3-46.5 cm; L: neck 14.4-16.4 cm, collar 45.2-51.5 cm
- Sizes overlap at the edges; then comfort decides (Stilo)
Choosing the angle
- A HANS is bought by angle: 20 degrees for an upright seating position, 30 degrees for a more reclined one (Simpson)
- 20 degrees is the most common choice, in closed cars; 30 degrees is used in single seaters and sports prototypes, where the driver sits more reclined
- Art. 3.1: the HANS collar must stay at least 60 degrees from the horizontal, with the driver seated
Care and replacement
- Tethers are dated; HANS says to replace them every 5 years, after a major impact, or sooner if wear shows
- After an impact, check the edges: delamination or cracks with exposed composite mean the device must be replaced
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from petroleum products, and wash it with warm soapy water
- One HANS can be used with several helmets, as long as each has anchors fitted
The approval in the rules
- The 2026 Appendix L (Chapter III, Art. 3) requires an FIA approved FHR for drivers and co-drivers in all international competitions, with the exceptions listed there (some historic cars and some alternative energy categories)
- Art. 3.1: any device attached to the helmet must be approved to FIA 8858, and approved systems are listed in FIA Technical List no. 29
- Art. 3.2: the FHR is worn only with FIA 8858 approved tethers and helmet anchors, and with an FIA 8859 or 8860 helmet
- Fitting follows the HANS installation guide, as required by Appendix L, Art. 3.2
- In FIA Technical List no. 29, the homologation end date is the last date on which the model may be manufactured; the approval number is read from the label on the device
- SFI 38.1 certification is renewed every 5 years through an inspection by Simpson (HANS); for FIA events the FIA 8858-2010 label is what counts
