Good to know

Choosing the size
  • Measure neck circumference above the shirt collar with a soft tape, or neck width with a ruler at the same height
  • Stilo chart (given for the 20 degree HANS III): M: neck 12-13.5 cm, collar 37.7-42.4 cm; L: neck 13-14.4 cm, collar 40.8-45.2 cm
  • Sizes overlap at the edges; then comfort decides (Stilo)
Choosing the angle
  • A HANS is bought by angle: 20 degrees for an upright seating position, 30 degrees for a more reclined one (Simpson)
  • 20 degrees is the most common choice, in closed cars; 30 degrees is used in single seaters and sports prototypes, where the driver sits more reclined
  • Art. 3.1: the HANS collar must stay at least 60 degrees from the horizontal, with the driver seated
Care and replacement
  • Tethers are dated; HANS says to replace them every 5 years, after a major impact, or sooner if wear shows
  • After an impact, check the edges: delamination or cracks with exposed composite mean the device must be replaced
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from petroleum products, and wash it with warm soapy water
  • One HANS can be used with several helmets, as long as each has anchors fitted
The approval in the rules
  • The 2026 Appendix L (Chapter III, Art. 3) requires an FIA approved FHR for drivers and co-drivers in all international competitions, with the exceptions listed there (some historic cars and some alternative energy categories)
  • Art. 3.1: any device attached to the helmet must be approved to FIA 8858, and approved systems are listed in FIA Technical List no. 29
  • Art. 3.2: the FHR is worn only with FIA 8858 approved tethers and helmet anchors, and with an FIA 8859 or 8860 helmet
  • Fitting follows the HANS installation guide, as required by Appendix L, Art. 3.2
  • In FIA Technical List no. 29, the homologation end date is the last date on which the model may be manufactured; the approval number is read from the label on the device
