Good to know

  • Unlike a classic HANS, the Hybrid runs down the back instead of over the collarbone. The harness the arms pass through brings it back into position after every impact or roll (Simpson)
  • Simpson describes the Hybrid range as the lowest profile of any comparable device, and the side wings keep the shoulder belts on the device
  • Several tethers also hold the head sideways, and the load is spread over several paths (Simpson)
  • The M61 anchor is FIA approved and releases when you pull the tether (HANS). If your helmet has no M61 anchors, they come in the M61 anchor kit, product code SI-M61-HAK
  • Replacement Quick Release tethers: M61 tether set, product code SI-M61-HAK2
  • All HANS and Hybrid devices are in the HANS and Simpson Hybrid collection
Choosing the size
  • Hybrid size is chosen by chest circumference, measured below the pectoral muscles with your race suit on; without the suit, add one inch (2.5 cm)
  • The tape sits flat against the body with no slack, but is not pulled tight
  • Simpson chart: XS 32-36 in (81-91 cm), S 36-40 in (91-102 cm), M 40-44 in (102-112 cm), L 44-48 in (112-122 cm), XL 48-52 in (122-132 cm)
Fitting it to the driver
  • Adjust it wearing your suit, underwear and helmet, seated in the car you race, ideally with someone helping
  • The chest strap sits below the pectoral line, and the shoulder belts cover between one third and two thirds of the device's shoulder pad
  • The rear tether is set so the helmet moves forward between 1 and 2.25 in (25-57 mm) with the chin level; its two adjustment points are shortened evenly
  • The side tethers allow no more than 0.5 in (13 mm) of sideways helmet movement and are set to equal length, so the head is not rotated in a side impact
The approval in the rules
  • The 2026 Appendix L (Chapter III, Art. 3) requires an FIA approved FHR for drivers and co-drivers in all international competitions, with the exceptions listed there (some historic cars and some alternative energy categories)
  • Art. 3.1: any device attached to the helmet must be approved to FIA 8858, and approved systems are listed in FIA Technical List no. 29
  • Art. 3.2: the FHR is worn only with FIA 8858 approved tethers and helmet anchors, and with an FIA 8859 or 8860 helmet
  • Fitting follows the Simpson installation guide for Hybrid Pro and Hybrid devices, as required by Appendix L, Art. 3.2
  • In FIA Technical List no. 29, the homologation end date is the last date on which the model may be manufactured; the approval number is read from the label on the device
